Commander Ranking
Mystery Booster Commander · Deck Counts
The ranking below uses the number of decks built around each commander since the set came out, which is a better guide to what players actually want to play than any list of what looks strongest on paper. Whtz, the Bibliophile sits far ahead of everything else, with Homer, the Hermit and Uugguu, the Omniplasm both in the 4,700s. After the top four, the numbers fall quickly: by twentieth place a commander has just over 1,100 decks.
All eight Rulebreaker commanders are in the set, and four of them make the top 20: Whtz, Grizzlegom, Maular and Seluma. The other four (The Unluckiest Planeswalker, The Everforger, Valko Indorian and Tolabow) are listed at the end. Rulebreaker is an ability word, so each card spells out its own exception to Commander's deckbuilding rules. For a full look at all eight, see The 8 Rulebreakers of Mystery Booster Commander, Ranked.
Notes On The Data
Mystery Booster Commander Edition (set code MBC) was released on 19 October 2026 according to Scryfall. At the time of writing, Scryfall lists every card in the set as not legal in the Commander format, so check with your playgroup before you build for a table that follows the format's rules strictly.
Deck counts were taken on 25 October 2026 and will keep moving. Maular, the Next Evolution and Ashaya's Enduring Bond are tied on 1,725 decks; Maular is placed higher because it has the better overall popularity rank.
Ranked by Decks Built · Least to Most Popular
Naya · Mystery Booster Commander
Jandor, Fortuned Traveler
Turns Beasts, Camels, Horses, Elephants and Wolves into Mounts.
1RGW · 4 CMC
2/4
Saddle
Mounts
Each Beast, Camel, Horse, Elephant and Wolf you control becomes a Mount in addition to its other types, with saddle 2. Whenever a saddled creature you control attacks, it gets +2/+2 until end of turn, you draw a card and you create a Food token. Those payoffs only need a saddled creature, so the deck can run Mounts and saddle-friendly creatures side by side.
Mono-White · Mystery Booster Commander · Rulebreaker
Seluma, Light of Aysen
Angels from every colour, and one that returns another each time it connects.
4W · 5 CMC
4/4
Angels
Reanimation
RulebreakerA deck with this commander can have Angel cards of any color identity and any basic land cards.
Seluma's Rulebreaker line allows Angel cards of any colour identity and any basic land cards. It is a 4/4 flyer, and whenever it deals combat damage to a player, you return target Angel creature card from your graveyard to the battlefield. A white deck gets every Angel ever printed, and Seluma can return a new one every time it connects.
Five-Colour · Mystery Booster Commander
Arzakon
A five-colour planeswalker that can be your commander.
WUBRG · 5 CMC
Planeswalker
Planeswalker Commander
Black Lotus
Arzakon is a planeswalker that can be your commander. Its +2 deals 3 damage to any other target, its -3 creates a Black Lotus token, and its -7 has each player shuffle their hand and graveyard into their library and draw seven cards. It costs one mana of each colour, so it asks for a five-colour deck.
Mono-Black · Mystery Booster Commander
Olinda the Oblivious
Mark an opponent's creature, and it makes them lose 2 life each upkeep.
3B · 4 CMC
3/3
Life Loss
Counters
Whenever Olinda enters or attacks, for each opponent you put an odor counter on up to one target creature that player controls without one. Creatures with an odor counter have "At the beginning of your upkeep, you lose 2 life", and that stays true for as long as the counter is on it, even if Olinda has left the battlefield. Every attack marks another creature.
Abzan · Mystery Booster Commander
Olag and Miau, New Friends
Zombies and Cats grow each other and drain on your end step.
WBG · 3 CMC
3/3
Zombies and Cats
Drain
Whenever another Zombie enters under your control, you put a +1/+1 counter on target Cat, and whenever another Cat enters, you put a +1/+1 counter on target Zombie. At your end step, each opponent loses life equal to the number of tapped Cats and Zombies you control. Olag and Miau is both a Zombie and a Cat, so it counts for both halves of the deck.
Izzet · Mystery Booster Commander
Itazura, Lingering Wick
Each upkeep, your opponents bid how much damage they will take.
2UR · 4 CMC
1/5
Politics
Impulse Play
At the beginning of your upkeep, Itazura exiles the top three cards of your library. Each opponent secretly chooses a number, the highest chooser takes that much damage, and that opponent may then cast one of the exiled cards for free. You put one of the remaining exiled cards into your hand. It is a 1/5, so it also holds the ground while the bidding does the work.
Five-Colour · Mystery Booster Commander
Nephilim Epochal
Tutors another Nephilim and makes them all unblockable by mono-coloured creatures.
U/R R/G G/W W/B · 4 CMC
4/4
Nephilim
Evasion
Nephilim Epochal costs one hybrid mana in each of four colour pairs, which makes it a five-colour commander. When it enters, you search your library for a Nephilim card and put it into your hand. Nephilim you control get +1/+1 for each other Nephilim you control and cannot be blocked by monocoloured creatures, so each one you add makes the rest bigger.
Grixis · Mystery Booster Commander
The Madcap Jester
Attack, exile an opponent's top card, and play it with any mana.
1UBR · 4 CMC
3/2
Impulse Play
Opponent's Library
Whenever The Madcap Jester attacks, each opponent exiles the top card of their library. Whenever a spell or ability you control causes cards to be exiled from an opponent's library, you may play those cards until the end of your next turn, and you can spend mana of any type to cast them. That lets a Grixis deck play whatever your opponents' libraries hand over, regardless of colour.
Gruul · Mystery Booster Commander
Ashaya's Enduring Bond
A legendary sorcery that is also a commander.
1RG · 3 CMC
Legendary Sorcery
Discover
Legendary Matters
Ashaya's Enduring Bond is a legendary sorcery that can be your commander. A legendary sorcery can only be cast if you control a legendary creature or planeswalker, so the deck needs legends in play first. When it resolves it discovers X, where X is the amount of mana spent, so paying commander tax for a recast makes the discover bigger each time.
Mono-Green · Mystery Booster Commander · Rulebreaker
Maular, the Next Evolution
A 10/10 that doubles every creature with mana value 7 or more.
5GG · 7 CMC
10/10
Big Creatures
Power Doubling
RulebreakerA deck with this commander can have creature cards with mana value 7 or greater of any color identity and any basic land cards.
Maular is a seven-mana 10/10. Its Rulebreaker line lets the deck play creature cards with mana value 7 or greater from any colour identity, plus any basic land cards, and whenever a creature you control with mana value 7 or greater attacks, its power and toughness are doubled until end of turn. A mono-green commander gets to reach into every colour for the largest creatures in the game.
Gruul · Mystery Booster Commander · Rulebreaker
Grizzlegom, Hurloon Hero
Count your basic land types: each one does something when it attacks.
5RG · 7 CMC
4/4
Lands Matter
Multicolour Payoffs
RulebreakerA deck with this commander can have any land cards.
Grizzlegom's Rulebreaker line lets the deck play any land cards at all. Whenever Grizzlegom attacks it counts your lands by basic type: a 1/1 Soldier for each Plains, a card for each Island, one life lost by each opponent for each Swamp, a +1/+1 counter on Grizzlegom for each Mountain, and 1 life for you for each Forest. Because the deck can include any land cards, it can chase every type, which is the point of the Rulebreaker clause.
Mono-Green · Mystery Booster Commander
Blor the Impervious
Three keywords and nothing else: trample, hexproof, indestructible.
3GG · 5 CMC
3/3
Voltron
Hard to Remove
Blor is a 3/3 for five that has trample, hexproof and indestructible, and that is the whole card. It cannot be targeted and it does not die to damage or destroy effects, so it is a very safe commander to carry equipment or auras on. Because it has no ability of its own, the deck is built entirely around what you attach to it.
Mardu · Mystery Booster Commander
Tsagan, Raider Warlord
A double-striking Dinosaur that rewards a team full of first strikers.
RWB · 3 CMC
1/4
Double Strike
Speed
Tsagan has double strike and the start your engines mechanic: your speed begins at 1 and rises each turn an opponent loses life, up to a maximum of 4. Whenever it attacks, creatures you control get +1/+0 for each creature you control with first strike or double strike. At max speed, Tsagan gains deathtouch and your other creatures gain first strike, so reaching max speed makes the attack bonus apply to the whole team.
Jund · Mystery Booster Commander
The Muckslinger Gang
Everything that is not in combat gets +3/+3.
1BRG · 4 CMC
3/3
Big Creatures
Static Buffs
Each other creature you control gets +3/+3 as long as it is not attacking or blocking, and creature spells you control and creature cards you own in any zone except the battlefield or the stack get +3/+3 as well. So your creatures are bigger whenever they are not attacking or blocking, and creature cards in your hand, graveyard and library count as bigger too.
Selesnya · Mystery Booster Commander
Elda, Conjurer of Spectacle
Your first creature spell each turn has demonstrate.
2GW · 4 CMC
2/2
Copy Effects
Value Creatures
The first nonlegendary creature spell you cast each turn has demonstrate. When you cast it, you may copy it, and if you do, you choose an opponent who also copies it. Each copy becomes a token. Your own copy is a free extra creature, and the copy your opponent gets is a downside you have to plan around, so Elda rewards creatures whose enter effects are stronger for you than for the table.
Jeskai · Mystery Booster Commander
Massimo, the Magician
Recast a one-mana spell every time a creature connects.
URW · 3 CMC
3/2
Cheap Spells
Combat Damage
Whenever Massimo or another creature you control enters, you may exile an instant or sorcery with mana value 1 from your graveyard. If you do, that creature gains "Whenever this creature deals combat damage to a player, copy the exiled card. You may cast the copy without paying its mana cost." The target list is narrow, but it makes a deck full of one-mana spells and a steady stream of creatures into repeatable value.
Mono-White · Mystery Booster Commander
Ekthi, Contaminator Priest
Every Equipment you control makes its own Phyrexian Germ.
3W · 4 CMC
3/3
Equipment
Phyrexians
Ekthi gives each Equipment you control living weapon, so each one that enters creates a 0/0 black Phyrexian Germ and attaches itself. Ekthi also gives other Phyrexians +1/+1, which means every Germ is a 1/1 before the Equipment adds anything. A white deck with a pile of Equipment and Phyrexian creatures gets a stream of bodies from cards it was already playing.
Sultai · Mystery Booster Commander
Uugguu, the Omniplasm
When another Ooze dies, it comes back twice.
BGU · 3 CMC
2/2
Ooze Tribal
Death Triggers
Whenever another nontoken Ooze you control dies, Uugguu creates two token copies of it. The copies are 2/2 and not legendary, which keeps legendary Oozes from hitting the legend rule. Every Ooze you play becomes a source of two bodies when it dies, and the two copies still carry the original's abilities, so enter and leave triggers get a second use.
Sultai · Mystery Booster Commander
Homer, the Hermit
A 0/9 Crab that mills the table every time you play a land.
BGU · 3 CMC
0/9
Self-Mill
Crabs and Sea Creatures
Whenever a land enters under your control, Homer mills any number of target players X cards, where X is twice the number of Crabs, Lobsters, Nautiluses, Starfish and Trilobites you control. Homer is a Crab itself, so even alone it mills two cards per land drop, and each extra creature of those types raises the number by two. You choose the targets, so it can mill opponents, yourself or both.
Azorius · Mystery Booster Commander · Rulebreaker
Whtz, the Bibliophile
No maximum deck size, and a draw engine that costs no mana at 200 cards.
1WU · 3 CMC
1/3
Big Decks
Card Draw
RulebreakerA deck with this commander has no maximum deck size.
Whtz is the clear leader, ahead of the second-placed commander by more than two thousand decks. Its Rulebreaker line removes the maximum deck size entirely, and its activated ability draws a card and gains 1 life for three mana and a tap. If your starting deck held 200 or more cards, that ability costs three less, so it becomes a plain tap. Everything else about Commander still applies, including singleton, so the work is finding enough good cards to justify the extra bulk.
