Overview
The Ur-Sphinx's most underrated quality is that you do not need to cast it to benefit from it. Eminence (the ability that makes every other Sphinx spell cost one less) works from the command zone. The deck's 33 other Sphinxes arrive cheaper from turn one, whether or not The Ur-Sphinx is on the battlefield. A commander that generates value before it costs a single mana is rare; The Ur-Sphinx does it continuously, for every Sphinx drawn across the whole game.
The attack trigger is where the deck shifts from value engine to game-ending machine. Whenever one or more Sphinxes you control attack, each player mills that many cards, and for each player you may cast one of the cards milled from their library without paying its mana cost. A squad of five Sphinxes mills five from every player, you included, and hands you the best card from each player's top five. You get one free cast per player per trigger; what grows with the number of attackers is how deep you get to look. Roaming Throne naming Sphinx makes the trigger happen twice: a second round of milling and a second free cast from each player.
The supporting shell is Esper control built to survive until the engine assembles. Mana Drain, Counterspell, Dovin's Veto, Swan Song, and Arcane Denial protect the stack. Kindred Dominance clears the board of everything that is not a Sphinx. Rise of the Dark Realms and Reanimate recover from graveyards the milling has filled. Smothering Tithe generates Treasure to fuel the high-mana curve. The overall package is a threat-dense control deck that wins through accumulated card advantage and a combat trigger with no ceiling.
The Combo: Roaming Throne + The Ur-Sphinx
Roaming Throne is a four-mana 4/4 artifact creature with ward {2}. As it enters, you choose a creature type and it becomes that type in addition to Golem: name Sphinx. From then on, whenever a triggered ability of another Sphinx you control triggers, it triggers an additional time.
The Ur-Sphinx's combat trigger reads "whenever one or more Sphinxes you control attack." With Roaming Throne on the battlefield naming Sphinx, this trigger fires twice per attack step. The two triggers resolve one after the other: the first mills each player and offers you one free cast from each player's milled cards; the second mills again and offers another. Five Sphinxes attacking (the Throne counts, since it is now a Sphinx) mills ten cards from each player and offers up to two free casts from each player's library in a single attack step.
Roaming Throne also doubles the triggers of every other Sphinx creature. Windreader Sphinx draws a card whenever a creature with flying attacks, so with the Throne out each flying attacker draws two. Unesh, Criosphinx Sovereign reveals four cards and splits them into piles twice for each Sphinx that enters. Kindred Discovery is an enchantment rather than a creature, so the Throne does not double it, but it still draws a card for each Sphinx that enters or attacks. A single four-mana artifact doubles most of the engine.

Playing the Deck
The first three turns are for mana. Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Talisman of Hierarchy, Fellwar Stone, Thought Vessel, Sapphire Medallion, Herald's Horn, and Urza's Incubator collectively make this a much faster deck than its mana curve suggests. By turn three it is possible to have five or six mana available, which gets a Sphinx like Sphinx of Foresight or Watcher of the Spheres on the battlefield with mana up for a counterspell. Eminence is already active from the command zone; every rock accelerates into a Sphinx that itself costs one less than printed.
The mid game is about building the Sphinx army while holding interaction. Kindred Discovery arriving on turn four or five puts the deck into a sustained draw engine: casting and attacking with Sphinxes refills the hand with each trigger. Unesh, Criosphinx Sovereign arriving in this window further reduces costs and turns each new Sphinx into a Fact or Fiction. The counterspell package protects these pieces: hold Mana Drain for whatever threatens Kindred Discovery or Unesh specifically, and let smaller plays resolve. Smothering Tithe during this window generates substantial Treasure off opponent draw spells and ramp, which offsets any mana spent on counters.
The late game opens when The Ur-Sphinx hits the table. The first attack is often the decisive one: even a conservative four-Sphinx squad mills four cards from every player and offers a free cast from each of their libraries, four free spells at a four-player table. Protect the attack step with Dovin's Veto or Arcane Denial. If the board needs clearing before the first swing, Kindred Dominance empties opponent boards while leaving the Sphinx army untouched. After a milling attack fills multiple graveyards, Rise of the Dark Realms returns every creature card from every graveyard to the battlefield under your control.
Strengths & Weaknesses
Strengths: Eminence generates value before The Ur-Sphinx costs a single mana, meaning the deck is functional and ahead of curve even when the commander is repeatedly removed. Kindred Discovery, Windreader Sphinx, and Consecrated Sphinx produce enough card draw to keep threats flowing through any amount of disruption. Kindred Dominance answers wide boards decisively without touching the Sphinx army. Rise of the Dark Realms has an effectively unlimited ceiling once the graveyards are stocked through milling. The free-cast window on the attack trigger is one of the highest-value triggers in the format at scale.
Weaknesses: The deck is hurt significantly by graveyard hate that exiles milled cards, which eliminates the free cast pool entirely. The strategy requires assembling several pieces before the attack trigger reaches its full potential: a fast combo deck that wins on turn four ignores the engine entirely. Noncreature permanents are difficult to answer: only Anguished Unmaking and Void Rend deal with them permanently, and Dream Eater and Enigma Thief can only bounce them. Strategies that win entirely through enchantments or artifacts (stax, enchantress combo) require the counterspell suite to hold them off for longer than the deck ideally wants to wait.
