Overview

Uldaros Theorix is the Dimir elder sphinx of Hexhaven, the elder who studied the recursive properties of identity and memory. Where the other four founders of that institution operate through direct force, life manipulation, or board control, Uldaros operates through recursion: it reads the library as a resource to be consumed, the graveyard as a workshop, and every identity lost to milling as a template for something new. It is a 5/5 flier that costs six mana and carries two abilities that feed each other in a continuous loop. The first ability mills three cards whenever a creature enters the battlefield as a copy of another creature. The second creates a token copy of any creature card put into the graveyard from the library. Every clone spell fires the first ability, filling the graveyard for future copies. Every creature milled fires the second, creating a new clone that in turn fires the first. The loop sustains itself as long as the library holds creatures.

The deck pursues this loop from two directions simultaneously. The clone package, one of the deepest available in Commander, fills the board with copies of the best creature on the battlefield at any given moment: Phantasmal Image, Clever Impersonator, Spark Double, Sakashima of a Thousand Faces, and a dozen others each enter as copies and immediately mill three cards into the graveyard. The self-mill package, equally dense, feeds the second ability directly: Mesmeric Orb, Hedron Crab, Stitcher's Supplier, Millikin, and the instant- and sorcery-speed mill spells mill creature after creature into the graveyard, each one optionally becoming a new token that then mills three more through Uldaros's first ability.

The graveyard specialists in this deck copy from graveyards specifically: Vizier of Many Faces, Flesh Duplicate, Naga Fleshcrafter, Waxen Shapethief, and Copycrook all create a creature that enters as a copy of a card already in a graveyard. These cards interact with Uldaros on both triggers simultaneously: they enter as copies (trigger one, mill three) and those three milled cards may themselves include creatures (trigger two, create tokens that are copies that enter and trigger one again). A single Flesh Duplicate casting in a developed board state can cascade into six or more separate trigger events before the chain resolves, all adding cards to the graveyard and all creating more material for the next clone spell.

The Engine: Uldaros + Syr Konrad, the Grim

Syr Konrad, the Grim Syr Konrad, the Grim

Syr Konrad, the Grim deals 1 damage to each opponent whenever a creature card is put into a graveyard from anywhere, and whenever a creature card leaves a graveyard. Both triggers fire from everything this deck does. A single Glimpse the Unthinkable mills ten cards into the graveyard: if five of them are creature cards, Syr Konrad deals 5 damage to each opponent from the mill alone. Uldaros then creates up to five token copies of those milled creatures. Each token that enters is a copy of another creature, triggering Uldaros to mill three more cards. If those three cards contain another creature card, Konrad fires again and Uldaros creates another token. Each token that eventually dies or leaves the graveyard triggers Syr Konrad a second time. In a board state where the library is half creatures, a single large mill event can deal 15 to 25 damage to each opponent before the chain fully resolves.

Mesmeric Orb accelerates this further. Every permanent untapping triggers Mesmeric Orb's mill effect: during an opponent's untap step with four opponents, you mill four cards if all four opponents untap four permanents each. In practice, with ten or more permanents on each side of the table, Mesmeric Orb mills six to ten cards per round of untaps. With Uldaros and Syr Konrad both in play, those passive mill triggers become a steady stream of damage and token creation that requires no mana investment. Dakmor Salvage adds a specific loop: Syr Konrad's {B} discard activation puts a card into the graveyard, which triggers Konrad, which lets you pay {B} again. With enough black mana, Konrad can loop its own trigger for damage while Dakmor Salvage recurs from the graveyard to the hand each time it is discarded.

Panharmonicon doubles the ETB abilities of every token creature created through Uldaros's second ability. When a token copy of Ledger Shredder enters the battlefield, Panharmonicon fires Ledger Shredder's triggered ability twice, surveilling twice. When a token copy of Overlord of the Balemurk enters, the Overlord's look-at-a-graveyard-and-exile-a-card ability fires twice. When a token copy of Thassa's Oracle enters, the Oracle's ability fires twice, looking at the top cards of the library twice and potentially winning if the library is empty or near-empty.

Result: With Uldaros, Syr Konrad, Mesmeric Orb, and Panharmonicon all in play, every untap step from any player mills cards and deals passive damage. Every clone spell mills three and creates tokens whose doubled ETBs generate further value. Every token death or creature milled is another Syr Konrad trigger. The damage total accumulates faster than most tables can answer all four pieces simultaneously, and a single large mill event such as Glimpse the Unthinkable or Windfall into an empty hand closes the game outright.

Key Cards

Thassa's Oracle
Primary Win Condition · Devotion Finisher
ETB: look at the top X cards of your library, where X is your devotion to blue. Put them back in any order, then if X is greater than or equal to the number of cards in your library, you win the game. In a deck designed to empty its own library as quickly as possible through Mesmeric Orb, Hedron Crab, Glimpse the Unthinkable, and Uldaros's own mill triggers, Thassa's Oracle arrives when the library is near-empty and wins outright. With Panharmonicon, the Oracle ETB fires twice, doubling the devotion check and making the win accessible even with a few cards remaining.
Mesmeric Orb
Self-Mill Engine · Passive Mill
Each permanent untapping mills that permanent's controller for one card. In a Commander game where each player untaps six to ten permanents each turn, Mesmeric Orb mills four to eight cards per round on your behalf alone, more with opponents' land drops and artifact activations. With Uldaros in play, every creature that hits the graveyard from this passive mill can become a token that then mills three more. Mesmeric Orb requires no mana after the initial two to cast, making it one of the most mana-efficient mill engines available in Dimir Commander and the card most responsible for consistently filling the graveyard by turn four or five.
Laboratory Maniac
Alternate Win Condition · Empty Library
If you would draw a card but have no cards in your library, you win the game instead. Laboratory Maniac and Thassa's Oracle serve the same role: both win from an empty library, and running both provides redundancy that makes the win condition harder to answer. If Thassa's Oracle is countered, Laboratory Maniac closes the game the moment you draw a card from any source with an empty library. Consider, Thought Scour, Frantic Search, and Windfall all draw cards, any of which triggers the Laboratory Maniac win when the library hits zero. Jace, Wielder of Mysteries provides a third copy of this effect on a planeswalker body.
Panharmonicon
ETB Doubler · Token Amplifier
If an artifact or creature entering the battlefield causes a triggered ability of a permanent you control to trigger, that ability triggers an additional time. Every token created by Uldaros's second ability enters with the ETB of the creature it copies. Panharmonicon doubles those ETBs: a token copy of Syr Konrad entering deals its own ETB damage twice; a token copy of Overlord of the Balemurk exiles two cards from graveyards; a token copy of Thassa's Oracle checks devotion twice and can win with more cards remaining. The density of ETB creatures in this clone package, from Ledger Shredder to Ancient Cellarspawn to The Ancient One, means Panharmonicon generates four to six doubled triggers per turn cycle in a developed board state.

Playing the Deck

The optimal early game deploys cheap mana artifacts (Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Talisman of Dominance, Fellwar Stone, Mind Stone) on turns one and two, then drops a mill engine on turn two or three: Hedron Crab enters and immediately mills three if you play a land, Stitcher's Supplier mills three on ETB and three on death, Millikin taps to mill one each turn while generating mana, and Mesmeric Orb begins passively milling the moment it resolves. The goal before Uldaros arrives is to have three to five creature cards in the graveyard so the first Uldaros trigger immediately populates the board with tokens. Dark Ritual and Lotus Bloom provide early mana acceleration for an earlier Uldaros, and Buried Alive and Entomb put specific creatures directly into the graveyard by name, pre-loading the graveyard with the most impactful targets before any milling even begins.

Buried Alive is one of the most important cards in the deck. For three mana, it places any three creature cards from the library directly into the graveyard. The optimal Buried Alive line in many games is Syr Konrad, Thassa's Oracle, and Laboratory Maniac: with Uldaros already in play, those three entries immediately create three token copies, each entering as copies of their respective originals and triggering Uldaros to mill nine more cards. Syr Konrad's token ETB does nothing (Konrad has no ETB trigger), but the real copy of Syr Konrad is typically hard-cast separately. Entomb finds a single specific creature and works identically at instant speed, allowing you to set up the exact token you need in response to a tap-out opportunity.

The mid-game is about maintaining the mill chain while keeping Uldaros protected. Swiftfoot Boots and clone spells serve double duty: a Sakashima of a Thousand Faces that copies Uldaros creates a second Uldaros with a different name, bypassing the legend rule and doubling the mill and token triggers from every subsequent clone event. Snap bounces a creature for free and untaps two islands, accelerating mana while removing a threat. Frantic Search draws two and discards two, fuelling the graveyard while cantripping. Vohar, Vodalian Desecrator lets you play an instant or sorcery directly from the top of your graveyard, giving every Glimpse the Unthinkable or Gifts Ungiven a second activation. Gifts Ungiven is particularly strong here: any four-card pile including Reanimate, Animate Dead, and two creatures guarantees the graveyard fills with at least two of those creatures and enables an immediate reanimation for two mana.

The end game requires one of three conditions: an empty library for Thassa's Oracle or Laboratory Maniac, a Syr Konrad in play with enough mill volume to deal lethal damage, or a token army large enough for a combat win. All three converge naturally through the mill engine. Once the library drops below twenty cards, one Windfall with three cards in hand, or one Glimpse the Unthinkable, empties it entirely. Ancestral Vision provides five cards of refuel for just one blue mana on the suspend count, arriving precisely when the mid-game grinding needs a fresh hand. Inevitable Betrayal takes an opponent's best creature for free, letting you clone it immediately with any copy spell for the Uldaros trigger.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths: The deck plays toward three win conditions simultaneously (library empty, Syr Konrad damage, combat), none of which require the others to function. Opposing graveyard hate hurts but does not shut the deck down entirely: the clone package still mills three per cast, and a Reanimate or Animate Dead following a graveyard wipe restores one key piece. The clone package is uniquely resilient because it does not commit to a specific target until resolution: Clever Impersonator, Phyrexian Metamorph, and Spark Double each choose their copy target on cast, meaning they copy whatever is most valuable at the moment they resolve, including opponents' creatures. Dimir's instant-speed interaction (Snap, Gifts Ungiven at instant speed, Frantic Search at instant speed) allows the deck to advance its gameplan on opponents' end steps, entering its own turn with the graveyard already filled from the previous cycle.

Weaknesses: The deck is heavily graveyard-dependent. A resolved Tormod's Crypt, Rest in Peace, or Leyline of the Void removes the graveyard and stops Uldaros's second trigger entirely, reducing the deck to a clone shell with no token production. The mill-to-token conversion requires Uldaros to be in play: without the commander, the deck mills itself without generating the token copy payoff, potentially leaving the library empty for an opponent to use against it. The library is the resource, and over-milling without a win condition in hand is a real failure mode. The deck runs very few counterspells and relies on speed rather than interaction to protect its gameplan, making it vulnerable to targeted disruption before the win condition lands.

Verdict
Uldaros Theorix is a six-mana commander that turns two of Dimir's most powerful but disconnected themes, self-mill and clone spells, into a single recursive engine. Without Uldaros, clone spells are value plays and self-mill is graveyard setup. With Uldaros, clone spells mill three cards each and those milled cards become more clones, which mill more cards, which become more clones. The loop is not infinite but it is fast: in a typical turn six board state with Mesmeric Orb, Hedron Crab, and two or three mill spells cast, the library drops by twenty-five to thirty cards in a single turn cycle, positioning Thassa's Oracle as a win within one or two subsequent turns. Syr Konrad converts every step of that process into damage, providing a damage-based backup win if the library runs low before the Oracle arrives. The deck asks a specific question of the table: can you answer a six-mana sphinx, a two-mana black knight, a two-mana artifact, and a four-mana artifact all simultaneously before the library hits zero? Most tables cannot, which makes Uldaros Theorix one of the most consistently threatening of the five Hexhaven elder sphinxes.
