Jared Carthalion is a Legendary Planeswalker that costs {W}{U}{B}{R}{G}. Its +1 creates a 3/3 Kavu creature token with trample that is all colors, its -3 puts a number of +1/+1 counters on up to two target creatures equal to the number of colors each one is, and its -6 returns target multicolored card from your graveyard to your hand, and if that card was all colors you draw a card and create two Treasure tokens. It can be your commander.
The precon already has the five-color creatures and Iridian Maelstrom. Each swap below pairs a cut with an add, and every card is scored with the same numbers the Oracle uses to build decks: synergy and inclusion from the Jared Carthalion decks, plus lift, which shows how much more often a card turns up in Jared Carthalion decks than in decks that could play it.

What is holding the deck back
Not enough multicolored payoffs
General Ferrous Rokiric, Brokers Ascendancy, Tome of the Guildpact and Infinite Guideline Station all reward multicolored spells or permanents, and Leyline of the Guildpact makes every nonland permanent you control all colors. They are among the top-scoring cards the precon leaves out.
Too many sweepers
Time Wipe, Duneblast, Lavalanche, Radiant Flames, Iridian Maelstrom and Merciless Eviction all clear creatures. Time Wipe and Radiant Flames are each played in about one Jared Carthalion deck in ten or fewer.
Tapped lands outside the lists
Bad River is not a card Jared Carthalion, and the deck has 39 lands plus several land-fetch spells decks usually play. Lands that help cast planeswalkers do more than a land that enters tapped.
The 12 swaps
Each pair shows the numbers for the card coming out and the card going in. Click a card image to zoom.

Radiant Flames is a three-mana sorcery that deals X damage to each creature, where X is the number of colors of mana spent to cast it. It is played in about one Jared Carthalion deck in twelve.
General Ferrous Rokiric is a 3/1 Human Soldier for {1}{R}{W} with hexproof from monocolored. Whenever you cast a multicolored spell, you create a 4/4 red and white Golem artifact creature token. A three-drop that makes a 4/4 for every multicolored spell, and the highest-scoring card the precon leaves out.

Echoing Truth is a two-mana instant that returns target nonland permanent and all others with the same name to their owners' hands. It is played in about one Jared Carthalion deck in eleven.
Omnath, Locus of All is a 4/4 for {W}{U}{B/P}{R}{G}. At the beginning of your first main phase you look at the top card of your library. If it has three or more colored mana symbols in its mana cost you may reveal it to add three mana in any combination of its colors, and either way it goes into your hand. A five-color creature that draws an extra card each turn.

Path to the World Tree is a two-mana enchantment that fetches a basic land to your hand, and it can be sacrificed for {2}{W}{U}{B}{R}{G} for a pile of effects. It is played in about one Jared Carthalion deck in eleven.
Brokers Ascendancy costs {G}{W}{U}. At the beginning of your end step you put a +1/+1 counter on each creature you control and a loyalty counter on each planeswalker you control. A three-mana enchantment that makes the board and Jared bigger every turn.

Zaxara, the Exemplary is a 2/3 deathtouch creature for {1}{B}{G}{U} that makes Hydra tokens when you cast spells with {X} in their cost. It is played in about one Jared Carthalion deck in ten.
Ramos, Dragon Engine is a 4/4 flying Dragon artifact creature for {6}. Whenever you cast a spell it gets a +1/+1 counter for each of that spell's colors, and removing five counters adds {W}{W}{U}{U}{B}{B}{R}{R}{G}{G} once each turn. A colorless creature that grows fastest on five-color spells and pays you back in mana.

Time Wipe is a five-mana sorcery that returns a creature you control to your hand, then destroys all creatures. It is played in about one Jared Carthalion deck in eight.
Elspeth, Sun's Champion is a six-mana planeswalker. Its +1 creates three 1/1 Soldier creature tokens, its -3 destroys all creatures with power 4 or greater, and its -7 gives your creatures +2/+2 and flying. A planeswalker that makes a board and has a sweeper that spares small creatures.

Selvala, Explorer Returned is a 2/4 for {1}{G}{W} that adds {G} and gains life for each nonland card revealed, and gives every player a card. It is played in about one Jared Carthalion deck in eight.
Infinite Guideline Station is a Legendary Artifact Spacecraft for {W}{U}{B}{R}{G}. When it enters it creates a tapped 2/2 colorless Robot artifact creature token for each multicolored permanent you control, and at 12 or more charge counters it becomes a 7/15 flier that draws a card for each multicolored permanent whenever it attacks. A five-color artifact that makes a team on the spot.

Atla Palani, Nest Tender is a four-mana creature that makes 0/1 Eggs that put a creature onto the battlefield when they die. It is played in about one Jared Carthalion deck in eight.
Tome of the Guildpact costs {5}. Whenever you cast a multicolored spell you draw a card, and it taps for one mana of any color. A rock that draws a card for nearly every spell in the deck.

Abundant Growth is a one-mana Aura that draws a card and makes a land tap for any color. It is played in about one Jared Carthalion deck in six.
Leyline of the Guildpact costs {G/W}{G/U}{B/G}{R/G}, and if it is in your opening hand you may begin the game with it on the battlefield. Each nonland permanent you control is all colors, and your lands are every basic land type. It fixes your mana and makes every creature all colors, so Jared's -3 puts five counters on each.

Search for Tomorrow is a three-mana sorcery that puts a basic land onto the battlefield, and it has suspend. It is played in about one Jared Carthalion deck in six.
The Kami War is a Saga for {1}{W}{U}{B}{R}{G}. Chapter I exiles target nonland permanent an opponent controls, chapter II returns another nonland permanent to its owner's hand and makes each opponent discard a card, and chapter III turns it into O-Kagachi Made Manifest, an all-color flying, trample Dragon Spirit. A removal spell that becomes a threat.

Archelos, Lagoon Mystic is a 2/4 for {1}{B}{G}{U} that makes other permanents enter tapped or untapped depending on whether it is tapped. It is played in about one Jared Carthalion deck in six.
Aragorn, the Uniter is a 5/5 for {R}{G}{W}{U}. Whenever you cast a white spell you create a 1/1 Human Soldier, a blue spell scries 2, a red spell deals 3 damage to target opponent, and a green spell gives a creature +4/+4. A four-drop that pays you for every spell you cast.

Explosive Vegetation is a four-mana sorcery that puts two basic lands onto the battlefield tapped. It is played in about one Jared Carthalion deck in six.
Conflux is a {3}{W}{U}{B}{R}{G} sorcery that searches your library for a white card, a blue card, a black card, a red card and a green card and puts them into your hand. It is also a multicolored spell, so it triggers every payoff above. A five-card tutor for the cost of eight mana.

Bad River enters tapped and sacrifices itself to fetch an Island or Swamp. It is not a card Jared Carthalion decks usually play.
Interplanar Beacon taps for {C}, gains you 1 life whenever you cast a planeswalker spell, and for {1} and a tap adds two mana of different colors to cast planeswalker spells. A land that fixes for Jared and every other planeswalker in the deck.

If you want to spend more
These are strong but sit outside a budget upgrade. Prices are the cheapest paper printing.
- Timeless Lotus$3.47
An artifact that taps for {W}{U}{B}{R}{G}, which casts a five-color spell on its own. It costs more than a budget upgrade should. - The World Tree$7.21
A land that gives your lands every color once you control six,. It costs more than a budget upgrade should.
Painbow already has the five-color creatures, the fixing and Iridian Maelstrom. The upgrade is cheap multicolored payoffs, permanents that are all colors and planeswalker support, in place of sweepers, land fetch and tapped lands. These twelve swaps cost about $17 in total.

How the numbers work
Inclusion is the share of Jared Carthalion decks (5,080 of them when this was written, 2026-10-28) that play the card. Synergy is how much more often they play it than other decks in the same colours. Oracle score is synergy × 0.6 plus inclusion × 0.4, the same blend The Oracle uses to rank cards for a deck. Lift compares how often the card appears in these decks with how often it could, capped at 8× here; it is shown for context and does not change the score.
Two cautions. Players who run the precon unmodified count as Jared Carthalion decks, which flatters every card the precon contains. Lift is high for many multicolored cards because few decks play them outside a five-color deck, so use lift to compare cards, not to judge one in isolation. A card the commander's decks do not usually play counts as 0 in the average score. Prices are the cheapest non-foil paper printing on TCGplayer (via Scryfall), in USD, and move daily.
