Willowdusk, Essence Seer costs {1}{B}{G} and is a Legendary Dryad Druid. For {1} and a tap, as a sorcery, you choose another target creature and put a number of +1/+1 counters on it equal to the amount of life you gained this turn or the amount of life you lost this turn, whichever is greater. Gain a lot of life or lose a lot of life, and a creature grows by that amount.
The precon already has the lifegain payoffs and the drains, including Vampire Nighthawk, Feed the Swarm, Sanguine Bond, Leyline Prowler and Mortality Spear. Each swap below pairs a cut with an add, and every card is scored with the same numbers the Oracle uses to build decks: synergy and inclusion from the Willowdusk decks, plus lift, which shows how much more often a card turns up in Willowdusk decks than in decks that could play it.

What is holding the deck back
Not enough cheap lifelinkers and drains
Valentin, Vault Skirge, Nighthawk Scavenger and Qarsi Revenant have lifelink, and Exsanguinate and Essence Harvest drain, which feed Willowdusk both ways. They are among the top-scoring cards the precon leaves out.
Cards outside the lists
Gluttonous Troll and Yedora, Grave Gardener are not cards Willowdusk, and Taste of Death, Sun Droplet and Druidic Satchel are each played in about one Willowdusk deck in eight to ten decks usually play.
Slow rocks and a heavy curve
Paradise Plume and Nissa's Renewal are slow ways to use mana in a deck with 40 lands, and the deck has 9 nonland cards at mana value six or more.
The 12 swaps
Each pair shows the numbers for the card coming out and the card going in. Click a card image to zoom.

Gluttonous Troll is a four-mana 3/3 trampler that makes Food. It is not a card Willowdusk decks usually play.
Valentin, Dean of the Vein is a 1/1 Legendary Vampire Warlock for {B} with menace and lifelink. If a nontoken creature an opponent controls would die it is exiled instead, and you may pay {2} to create a Pest token. Its back face, Lisette, puts a +1/+1 counter on each of your creatures whenever you gain life. A one-drop that gains life and makes a Pest, and the highest-scoring card the precon leaves out.

Yedora, Grave Gardener is a five-mana 5/5 that returns dying creatures as face-down Forests. It is not a card Willowdusk decks usually play.
Nighthawk Scavenger is a Vampire Rogue for {1}{B}{B} with flying, deathtouch and lifelink. Its power is equal to 1 plus the number of card types among cards in your opponents' graveyards. A three-drop that gains life with every hit.

Taste of Death is a six-mana sorcery where each player sacrifices three creatures. It is played in about one Willowdusk deck in ten.
Exsanguinate costs {X}{B}{B}. Each opponent loses X life and you gain life equal to the life lost this way. A scalable drain that gains you a large amount of life in one go.

Sun Droplet is a two-mana artifact that gains 1 life for each damage you have been dealt. It is played in about one Willowdusk deck in nine.
Vault Skirge is a 1/1 Phyrexian Imp artifact creature for {1}{B/P}, which can be paid with 2 life, with flying and lifelink. A two-drop that gains life every attack, or loses 2 life if you pay with life, which also works with Willowdusk.

Druidic Satchel is a three-mana artifact that reveals cards for Saprolings, lands or 2 life. It is played in about one Willowdusk deck in eight.
Accomplished Alchemist is a 2/5 Elf Druid for {3}{G}. For a tap it adds one mana of any color, or X mana of any one color where X is the life you gained this turn. A four-drop that ramps and turns lifegain into mana.

Moldervine Reclamation is a five-mana enchantment that gains 1 life and draws a card whenever your creature dies. It is played in about one Willowdusk deck in four, but with very little synergy.
Corpsejack Menace is a 4/4 Fungus for {2}{B}{G}. If one or more +1/+1 counters would be put on a creature you control, twice that many are put on it instead. A four-drop in exactly the commander's colors that doubles Willowdusk's counters.

Epicure of Blood is a five-mana 4/4 that drains for each life gained. It is played in about one Willowdusk deck in seven.
Qarsi Revenant is a 3/3 Vampire for {1}{B}{B} with flying, deathtouch and lifelink. Renew: for {2}{B}, exiling it from your graveyard, you put a flying counter, a deathtouch counter and a lifelink counter on target creature. A three-drop that gains life and gives its keywords to another creature later.

Ob Nixilis Reignited is a five-mana planeswalker that draws cards and destroys creatures. It is played in about one Willowdusk deck in six.
Essence Harvest costs {2}{B}. Target player loses X life and you gain X life, where X is the greatest power among creatures you control. A three-mana drain that scales with the creature Willowdusk grows.

Silversmote Ghoul is a three-mana 3/1 that returns from the graveyard if you gained 3 or more life. It is played in about one Willowdusk deck in six.
Banehound is a 1/1 Nightmare Dog for {B} with lifelink and haste. A one-drop that gains life the turn it arrives.

Paradise Plume is a four-mana rock that gains 1 life when a spell of the chosen color is cast. It is played in about one Willowdusk deck in six.
K'rrik, Son of Yawgmoth is a 2/2 Legendary Phyrexian Horror Minion for {4}{B/P}{B/P}{B/P} with lifelink. For each {B} in a cost, you may pay 2 life rather than pay that mana, and whenever you cast a black spell it gets a +1/+1 counter. A creature that turns life into mana, which makes Willowdusk's life loss bigger.

Blight Mound is a three-mana enchantment that makes Pests when your nontoken creatures die. It is played in about one Willowdusk deck in five.
Scheming Silvertongue is a 1/3 Vampire Warlock for {1}{B} with flying and lifelink. At the beginning of your second main phase, if you gained 2 or more life this turn, it becomes prepared, which lets you cast a copy of Sign in Blood, which draws two cards and loses 2 life. A two-drop that gains life and draws cards.

Nissa's Renewal is a six-mana sorcery that fetches three basic lands and gains 7 life. It is played in about one Willowdusk deck in five.
Gyre Sage is a 1/2 Elf Druid for {1}{G} with evolve. For a tap it adds {G} for each +1/+1 counter on it. A two-drop that grows on its own and ramps with Willowdusk's counters.

Played in 63% of Willowdusk decks. A flying, deathtouch, lifelink creature for three mana. - Mortality Spear$0.27

If you want to spend more
These are strong but sit outside a budget upgrade. Prices are the cheapest paper printing.
- Gray Merchant of Asphodel$0.63
Drains each opponent for your devotion to black when it enters. It costs more than a budget upgrade should. - Unspeakable Symbol$1.19
An enchantment that pays 3 life to put a +1/+1 counter on a creature, which feeds Willowdusk's life loss. It costs more than a budget upgrade should.
Witherbloom Witchcraft already has the lifegain payoffs, the drains and Willowdusk's counter engine. The upgrade is cheap lifelinkers and drainers that gain or lose life every turn, in place of slow cards and cards that Willowdusk decks leave out. These twelve swaps cost about $7 in total.

How the numbers work
Inclusion is the share of Willowdusk, Essence Seer decks (1,816 of them when this was written, 2026-10-28) that play the card. Synergy is how much more often they play it than other decks in the same colours. Oracle score is synergy × 0.6 plus inclusion × 0.4, the same blend The Oracle uses to rank cards for a deck. Lift compares how often the card appears in these decks with how often it could, capped at 8× here; it is shown for context and does not change the score.
Two cautions. Players who run the precon unmodified count as Willowdusk decks, which flatters every card the precon contains. Lift is high for many lifegain cards because few decks play them outside a lifegain deck, so use lift to compare cards, not to judge one in isolation. A card the commander's decks do not usually play counts as 0 in the average score. Prices are the cheapest non-foil paper printing on TCGplayer (via Scryfall), in USD, and move daily.
