Overview
Abzan Armor is a defender-and-toughness midrange deck built around Felothar the Steadfast. Felothar makes each creature you control assign combat damage equal to its toughness rather than its power and lets your creatures attack as though they didn't have defender. That turns the deck's big, high-toughness walls into its attackers, and the Abzan colours give it the removal and recursion to back them up.
The engine has three layers. Walls and other defenders such as Axebane Guardian and Rampart Architect protect you while they ramp you. Toughness payoffs such as Felothar and Baldin, Century Herdmaster convert those walls into damage. Finally, Abzan removal and recursion like Swords to Plowshares, Anguished Unmaking and Will of the Abzan keep the table under control while the board develops.
Key Cards
Playing the Deck
The early game is about mana and walls. Axebane Guardian can tap for several mana once you control a couple of defenders, Arbor Adherent adds mana equal to the greatest toughness among your other creatures, and the Signets and Sol Ring help you reach Felothar on turn four. Rampart Architect makes a 1/3 Wall every time it enters or attacks, so it quickly builds a defensive line.
The mid game begins once Felothar is on the battlefield. From then on your walls attack for their toughness, so a table that was happy to ignore a row of defenders suddenly faces a lot of damage. Tree of Redemption and Wall of Reverence give you life gain and a lifeline against aggressive decks while your attackers get through.
In the late game the deck wins through combat. Baldin, Century Herdmaster pumps up to one hundred creatures with +0/+X, Dragonlord Dromoka is a 5/7 flyer with lifelink that stops opponents casting spells on your turn, and Zetalpa, Primal Dawn is an 8-mana 4/8 with flying, double strike, vigilance, trample and indestructible. Tip the Scales lets you sacrifice a creature to give every creature -X/-X, where X is the sacrificed creature's toughness, if you need to reset the board.
Strengths & Weaknesses
Strengths: The deck has a lot of mana, a lot of high-toughness bodies and a clear way to turn them into damage. Defenders like Hornet Nest punish attackers, and the Abzan colours provide plenty of removal for the permanents your walls can't handle.
Weaknesses: Most of the deck's offence depends on Felothar or Baldin being on the battlefield, so removal aimed at them slows the plan a great deal. Walls have little power of their own, so without Felothar the deck is slow to pressure opponents, and it can struggle against fast combo decks.
