Overview

Draconic Rage is a Dragon deck with a taste for risk. Vrondiss, Rage of Ancients has enrage: whenever it is dealt damage, you may create a 5/4 red and green Dragon Spirit creature token with "When this token deals damage, sacrifice it." It can also hurt itself, since whenever you roll one or more dice, you may have Vrondiss deal 1 damage to itself. Every die roll can therefore make a Dragon.

The 99 cards are 26 creatures, 9 artifacts, 8 enchantments, 9 instants, 8 sorceries and 39 lands. 16 of the creatures are Dragons, including Atarka, World Render, Klauth, Unrivaled Ancient, Terror of Mount Velus and Skyline Despot, backed by cost reducers such as Dragonlord's Servant and Dragonspeaker Shaman. The dice cards include Barbarian Class, Chaos Dragon, Neverwinter Hydra, Earth-Cult Elemental, Wild Endeavor and Bag of Tricks, and they trigger Vrondiss as well.

Key Cards

◈
Barbarian Class
Dice Enabler · Pump
A class for {R}. If you would roll one or more dice, instead roll that many dice plus one and ignore the lowest roll. At level 2, whenever you roll dice a creature gets +2/+0 and menace, and at level 3 your creatures have haste. It makes dice rolls better and trigger Vrondiss more.
◈
Skyline Despot
Monarch · Token Maker
A 5/5 for {5}{R}{R}. It has flying, and when it enters you become the monarch. At the beginning of your upkeep, if you're the monarch, you create a 5/5 red Dragon creature token with flying, so it makes a Dragon every turn while you keep the crown.
◈
Terror of Mount Velus
Double Strike · Finisher
A 5/5 for {5}{R}{R}. It has flying and double strike, and when it enters, creatures you control gain double strike until end of turn. Cast before combat, it gives your whole team double strike for a turn.
◈
Klauth, Unrivaled Ancient
Mana Engine · Haste Dragon
A 4/4 for {5}{R}{G}. It has flying and haste, and whenever it attacks you add X mana in any combination of colours, where X is the total power of attacking creatures, to be spent only on spells. It can pay for a huge spell on the turn it attacks.

Playing the Deck

The early game is about mana and cost reducers. Dragonlord's Servant, Dragonspeaker Shaman and Dragonmaster Outcast set up your Dragons, Rampant Growth, Cultivate, Explore, Sol Ring, Arcane Signet and Gruul Signet ramp you, and Component Pouch rolls a d20 for mana. Barbarian Class makes your dice better from turn one.

The middle of the game is about making Dragons. Scourge of Valkas deals damage whenever a Dragon enters, Dragon's Hoard draws cards, Chaos Dragon attacks every turn, and Opportunistic Dragon steals a Human or artifact. Neverwinter Hydra rolls X dice for counters, Earth-Cult Elemental makes opponents sacrifice permanents, and Skyship Stalker and Shivan Hellkite use mana to grow or deal damage.

The late game is about huge Dragons and a mass pump. Bogardan Hellkite deals 5 damage divided among any number of targets, Savage Ventmaw adds mana when it attacks, and Gratuitous Violence doubles your creatures' damage. Decree of Savagery puts four +1/+1 counters on each creature you control, and Klauth's Will, Magmaquake and Chain Reaction clear the way.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths: The deck has a huge amount of power in its Dragons, plenty of ramp, and a commander that makes more Dragons for any damage or dice roll. It also has real interaction and protection, including Beast Within, Spit Flame, Magmaquake, Return to Nature and Klauth's Will.

Weaknesses: Many Dragons are expensive, and the deck relies on lots of mana, so a slow draw hurts. A few of the dice effects are random, so results vary, and a spot removal spell on Vrondiss slows the plan. Magmaquake and Klauth's Will hit creatures without flying, which affects some of your own non-Dragon creatures.

Verdict
Draconic Rage is a big, loud and fun deck with strong Dragons and a commander that thrives on chaos. It is a good choice for players who like Dragons and want a deck that is easy to play and exciting to watch.
