Overview

Food and Fellowship uses two partner commanders to define a playstyle rooted in incremental advantage. Sam, Loyal Attendant creates a Food token at the beginning of every combat on your turn and makes Food's activated abilities cost {1} less, ensuring a steady, unconditional supply of sacrificial artifacts that fuel the deck's many payoffs from turn three onward. Frodo, Adventurous Hobbit turns that lifegain into a slow-building threat: whenever he attacks, if you've gained three or more life that turn, the Ring tempts you, and once the Ring has tempted you twice with Frodo as your Ring-bearer, his attacks also draw a card.

The Abzan colour identity brings the best of each colour's token and lifegain support: white provides lifegain and protection, black adds removal and resilience, and green contributes the mana acceleration and creature density needed to flood the board. At its core, this deck is a value engine disguised as a Food deck. Sam creates a Food token at the beginning of combat on your turn and makes Foods cheaper to use, Treebeard, Gracious Host and Pippin, Warden of Isengard make still more, and cards like Well of Lost Dreams convert life gained from cracking Food into additional cards.

Key Cards

◈
Treebeard, Gracious Host
Food Maker · Lifegain Payoff
A 0/5 with trample and ward {2}. When it enters, create two Food tokens, and whenever you gain life, put that many +1/+1 counters on target Halfling or Treefolk. Every Food you crack grows one of your Halflings.
◈
Pippin, Warden of Isengard
Food Maker · Team Pump
For {1} and a tap, create a Food token. You can also tap and sacrifice four Foods to give your other creatures +3/+3 and haste until end of turn, as a sorcery, which turns a pile of Food into a lethal attack.
◈
Well of Lost Dreams
Draw Engine · Lifegain Payoff
Whenever you gain life, you may pay {X}, where X is less than or equal to the life you gained, and draw X cards. Every Food you sacrifice for life becomes a draw spell, converting the deck's lifegain into card advantage.
◈
Bilbo, Birthday Celebrant
Lifegain · Alternate Win
A three-colour 2/3. If you would gain life, you gain that much life plus 1 instead. For {2}{W}{B}{G}, a tap and exiling Bilbo you can search your library for any number of creature cards and put them onto the battlefield, but only if you have 111 or more life.

Playing the Deck

The early game is about establishing both partner commanders as quickly as possible. Sam comes down first if possible: his combat-trigger Food generation immediately starts stocking the supply regardless of what else is on the board. Frodo follows, and once both are in play the deck is generating a Food every combat while looking for enough incidental lifegain, usually from cracking Food for 3 life, to gain 3 or more life in a turn and set up his attack trigger. The first Ring temptations unlock in a fixed order: first, the Ring-bearer can't be blocked by creatures with greater power; then attacking with the Ring-bearer draws and discards a card; then a creature that blocks the Ring-bearer is sacrificed after combat; then the Ring-bearer's combat damage also drains each opponent for 3 life.

The mid game escalates when Pippin or Treebeard enters the board, since both add more Food and the deck rewards every life point you gain. Bilbo, Birthday Celebrant makes each life gain event bigger by 1, which feeds Well of Lost Dreams and Treebeard. The deck plays at a patient midrange pace, generating more resources each turn and converting those resources into card draw and board presence.

Closing games comes through a combination of Frodo's accumulated Ring-bearer bonuses once he has tempted the Ring enough times, sustained lifegain and card advantage outpacing the table, and the ability to outlast attrition with green's mana and black's removal. Pippin's four-Food sacrifice can also give the whole team +3/+3 and haste for a surprise lethal attack.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths: Food and Fellowship has exceptional staying power. The lifegain from Food tokens keeps the deck well above its starting life total against aggressive opponents, and the card draw from Well of Lost Dreams ensures the hand never empties. The partner commander setup means both Sam's unconditional Food generation and Frodo's Ring-bearer upside are online for a combined five mana across two cards, and the Ring temptations on Frodo accumulate permanently once unlocked.

Weaknesses: The deck is relatively slow in the very early game without Sam or Frodo in play. Against extremely fast combo decks that win before turn six or seven it can struggle to establish its engine in time. The strategy is also transparent: experienced opponents will prioritise killing Sam before the Food engine fully assembles. Black's removal helps defend, but the deck has limited ways to protect its key pieces beyond raw card advantage.

Verdict
Food and Fellowship is a flavourfully rich and mechanically interesting precon that rewards patient, value-oriented play. The Frodo and Sam partner pairing is one of the most thematically satisfying commander pairings in recent memory, and the Food token engine has genuine upside with Treebeard, Pippin and Well of Lost Dreams. The deck is an excellent choice for players who enjoy grinding out advantages and outlasting opponents rather than executing a linear strategy.
