Zimone, Mystery Unraveler costs {2}{G}{U}. Whenever a land enters under your control, you manifest dread if it is the first time this ability has resolved this turn, and otherwise you may turn a permanent you control face up. Manifest dread looks at the top two cards, puts one onto the battlefield face down as a 2/2 and the other into your graveyard. Every land drop is a creature, and every extra land turns one face up.
The precon already has the manifesters and the landfall payoffs, including They Came from the Pipes, Yedora and Aesi, Tyrant of Gyre Strait. Each swap below pairs a cut with an add, and every card is scored with the same numbers the Oracle uses to build decks: synergy and inclusion from the Zimone decks, plus lift, which shows how much more often a card turns up in these decks than in decks that could play it.

What is holding the deck back
Not enough cheap manifest dread
Threats Around Every Corner, Hauntwoods Shrieker and Valgavoth's Onslaught each manifest dread, and Paranormal Analyst and Vannifar make the face-down creatures better. They are among the top-scoring cards the precon leaves out.
Cards that do nothing with face-down creatures
Giggling Skitterspike, Kefnet the Mindful, Kianne, Skaab Ruinator, Biomass Mutation and Body of Knowledge do not manifest, turn anything face up or reward it. Most are played in about one Zimone deck in six or fewer.
A top-heavy deck
Fourteen nonland cards have a mana value of six or more, including Dig Through Time at eight mana and Greater Tanuki. Manifest dread works best when the early turns each make a creature.
The 13 swaps

Giggling Skitterspike is a four-mana indestructible 1/1 artifact creature that pings opponents when it attacks, blocks or is targeted. It is not a card Zimone decks usually play.
Threats Around Every Corner costs {3}{G}: when it enters you manifest dread, and whenever a face-down permanent enters under your control you search for a basic land and put it onto the battlefield tapped. Every manifest ramps you, and every land is a landfall trigger. It is the highest-scoring card the precon leaves out.

Kefnet the Mindful is a 5/5 flying, indestructible God for {2}{U} that cannot attack or block unless you have seven or more cards in hand. It is not a card Zimone decks usually play.
Paranormal Analyst costs {1}{U}: whenever you manifest dread, you put a card you put into your graveyard this way into your hand. Every manifest is a free card, and Zimone manifests every turn.

Kianne, Corrupted Memory is a 2/2 that gets a counter whenever you draw and gives flash to spells depending on whether its power is even or odd. It is not a card Zimone decks usually play.
Hauntwoods Shrieker is a 3/3 for {1}{G}{G}: whenever it attacks you manifest dread, and for {1}{G} you reveal a face-down permanent and may turn it face up if it is a creature. A three-drop that makes a creature every attack.

Skaab Ruinator is a 5/6 flier for {1}{U}{U} that needs three creature cards exiled from your graveyard as an additional cost. It is not a card Zimone decks usually play.
Vannifar, Evolved Enigma is a 3/4 for {2}{G}{U}. At the beginning of combat each turn you either cloak a card from your hand (a face-down 2/2 with ward {2}) or put a +1/+1 counter on each colorless creature you control. A second engine that makes face-down creatures and grows them.

Biomass Mutation sets your creatures' base power and toughness to X/X until end of turn for {X}{G/U}{G/U}. It is played in about one Zimone deck in eight.
Secret Plans costs {G}{U}: your face-down creatures get +0/+1, and whenever a permanent you control is turned face up you draw a card. Zimone turns permanents face up, and each one is a card.

Simic Signet is a two-mana rock, in a deck with Arcane Signet, Sol Ring and mana creatures.
Valgavoth's Onslaught costs {X}{X}{G}: manifest dread X times, then put X +1/+1 counters on each of those creatures. At X=2 it is five mana for two big creatures, and a late-game finisher.

Cackling Counterpart is a three-mana copy of a creature you control, with flashback for seven. It is played in about one Zimone deck in eight.
Experiment Twelve is a 4/4 trampler for {3}{G}. Whenever it or another creature you control is turned face up, you put +1/+1 counters on that creature equal to its power, and it has disguise {4}{G}. Every face-up turn doubles a creature.

Greater Tanuki is a 6/5 trampling Dog enchantment creature for {4}{G}{G}, with a channel that fetches a basic land. It is played in about one Zimone deck in seven.
Oblivious Bookworm is a 2/3 for {G}{U}. At your end step you may draw a card, and you discard a card only if no permanent entered face down or turned face up this turn. With Zimone, that is nearly always a free draw.

Body of Knowledge is a five-mana creature whose size is the number of cards in your hand, and it has no maximum hand size. It is played in about one Zimone deck in six.
Rampaging Baloths costs {4}{G}{G}: it has trample and landfall, so whenever a land enters under your control you create a 4/4 Beast. Every land drop is a 4/4 and a manifest.

Dig Through Time costs {6}{U}{U} with delve. It digs seven cards deep, and is played in about one Zimone deck in six. The graveyard it eats is the one you fill with manifest dread.
Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath costs {1}{G}{U}: when it enters you sacrifice it unless it escaped, and whenever it enters or attacks you gain 3 life, draw a card and may put a land onto the battlefield. A land drop for every cast and every escape, which is a landfall trigger for Zimone.

Citanul Hierophants ({3}{G}) is one of the lowest-scoring cards in the precon, at 14 in the Oracle: it is in 15% of Zimone decks with 14% synergy. It reads: Creatures you control have "{T}: Add {G}."
Abhorrent Oculus ({2}{U}) scores 53: it is in 54% of Zimone decks with 52% synergy. It reads: As an additional cost to cast this spell, exile six cards from your graveyard. Flying. At the beginning of each opponent's upkeep, manifest dread.

Rashmi, Eternities Crafter ({2}{G}{U}) is one of the lowest-scoring cards in the precon, at 17 in the Oracle: it is in 19% of Zimone decks with 16% synergy. It reads: Whenever you cast your first spell each turn, reveal the top card of your library. You may cast it without paying its mana cost if it's a spell with lesser mana value.
Ancient Greenwarden ({4}{G}{G}) scores 49: it is in 53% of Zimone decks with 46% synergy. It reads: Reach. You may play lands from your graveyard. If a land entering causes a triggered ability of a permanent you control to trigger, that ability triggers an additional time.

Oversimplify ({3}{G}{U}) is one of the lowest-scoring cards in the precon, at 20 in the Oracle: it is in 23% of Zimone decks with 18% synergy. It reads: Exile all creatures. Each player creates a 0/0 green and blue Fractal creature token and puts a number of +1/+1 counters on it equal to the total power of creatures they.
Harrow ({2}{G}) scores 39: it is in 46% of Zimone decks with 35% synergy. It reads: As an additional cost to cast this spell, sacrifice a land. Search your library for up to two basic land cards, put them onto the battlefield, then shuffle.

What to keep
These cards are doing the deck's heavy lifting. Do not cut them.
- They Came from the Pipes$0.29
Played in 86% of Zimone decks. Manifests dread twice when it enters, which is two creatures for five mana. - Yedora, Grave Gardener$0.19
Returns your dying nontoken creatures face down, which gives Zimone more face-down creatures to turn up. - Ashaya, Soul of the Wild$14.02
Its power and toughness equal the number of lands you control, and your nontoken creatures are Forest lands, so every creature is a landfall trigger. - Scroll of Fate$0.24
Manifests a card from your hand for {T}, which is a free face-down creature every turn. - Aesi, Tyrant of Gyre Strait$12.07
Played in 89% of Zimone decks. Lets you play an additional land each turn and draws a card whenever a land enters.
If you want to spend more
These are strong but sit outside a budget upgrade. Prices are the cheapest paper printing.
- Verdant Kraken$2.71
Creates a 3/3 land creature at each upkeep. A very strong card, but it costs more than a budget upgrade should. - Koma, Cosmos Serpent$4.23
A seven-mana finisher that makes Serpents every upkeep and can't be countered. - Hedge Shredder$2.45
A Vehicle that mills and puts lands onto the battlefield, which is landfall for Zimone.
Jump Scare! already has the landfall and the face-down creatures. The upgrade is more cheap manifest dread, more payoffs for turning permanents face up, and fewer cards that do nothing with them. These thirteen swaps cost about $26 in total.

How the numbers work
Inclusion is the share of Zimone, Mystery Unraveler decks (14,874 of them when this was written, 2026-10-27) that play the card. Synergy is how much more often they play it than other decks in the same colours. Oracle score is synergy × 0.6 plus inclusion × 0.4, the same blend The Oracle uses to rank cards for a deck. Lift compares how often the card appears in these decks with how often it could, capped at 8× here; it is shown for context and does not change the score.
Two cautions. Players who run the precon unmodified count as Zimone decks, which flatters every card the precon contains. Lift is very high for many manifest dread cards because they are new and rarely played outside this kind of deck, so use lift to compare cards, not to judge one in isolation. A card the commander's decks do not usually play counts as 0 in the average score. Prices are the cheapest non-foil paper printing on TCGplayer (via Scryfall), in USD, and move daily.
