Ghalta, Primal Hunger is a 12-mana trampler that costs {X} less to cast, where X is the total power of creatures you control. Two creatures with 6 power each and she costs {G}{G}. The deck is built to get big creatures onto the table so she arrives a turn or two early.
The precon already has the mana creatures and the fatties to do that, including Goreclaw, Hulking Raptor and Llanowar Tribe. Each swap below pairs a cut with an add, and every card is scored with the same numbers the Oracle uses to build decks: synergy and inclusion from the Ghalta decks, plus lift, which shows how much more often a card turns up in Ghalta decks than in decks that could play it.

What is holding the deck back
Not enough payoffs for big power
Cards like Ghalta the Unstoppable, Yorvo, Greater Good and Garruk, Primal Hunter all get better as your creatures get bigger, and most Ghalta players run them. The precon plays a lot of fat creatures but few cards that turn all that power into cards or tokens.
Slow and situational lands
Thirty-nine lands, thirty-two of them Forests, plus Sol Ring, Commander's Sphere and a long list of mana creatures. Tranquil Thicket enters tapped, War Room costs {3} and life to draw, and Scavenger Grounds only matters with a Desert. Three of the swaps turn lands into spells.
A few cards that do not fit the plan
Arachnogenesis is a fog, and Harmonize is a plain draw spell in a deck that can draw cards for its creatures' power. Neither one gets Ghalta cast faster.
The 14 swaps
Each pair shows the numbers for the card coming out and the card going in. Click a card image to zoom.

Commander's Sphere is a three-mana rock that taps for one mana of your commander's colours, and the deck has Sol Ring, a pile of mana creatures and 39 lands. It is played in about one Ghalta deck in sixteen.
Topiary Stomper is a 4/4 vigilance Plant Dinosaur for {1}{G}{G}. When it enters it fetches a basic land onto the battlefield tapped. It cannot attack or block until you control seven lands, but its four power counts toward Ghalta's discount from the moment it lands.

Loot is a 1/4 that lets you play an extra land each turn, and for {4}{G}{G} and a tap it digs for a creature. It is a very slow engine, and played in about one Ghalta deck in seven.
Ghalta the Unstoppable is an 8/8 trampler for {8}{G} that costs {X} less, where X is the greatest power among your creatures. With a 4-power creature out she costs five mana, and your other creatures gain trample.

Arachnogenesis is an instant that makes a 1/2 Spider for each creature attacking you and prevents combat damage from non-Spiders. It is a defensive card in a deck that wants to attack, and it is played in about one Ghalta deck in nine.
Return of the Wildspeaker costs {4}{G} at instant speed and either draws cards equal to the greatest power among your non-Human creatures or gives them +3/+3. With a board of fatties that is a huge draw, and it is in more than half of Ghalta decks.

Harmonize draws three cards for four mana. It does nothing else, and the deck has better ways to draw.
Yorvo, Lord of Garenbrig is a {G}{G}{G} creature that enters with four +1/+1 counters, so it is a 4/4 for three mana. Whenever another green creature enters it gets a counter, and another if that creature has greater power. It grows with every fatty you cast.

This is the first of three land-for-spell swaps. Tranquil Thicket enters tapped and cycles for {G}, in a deck with 39 lands.
Greater Good costs {2}{G}{G}: sacrifice a creature, draw cards equal to its power, then discard three. Sacrifice an 8/8 and you draw eight and discard three. Hold it for the creatures that are about to die anyway.

War Room taps for {C}, and for {3}, a tap and life it draws a card. It is played in about one Ghalta deck in four, but it is a land that makes your colours less reliable and your mana slower.
Garruk, Primal Hunter costs {2}{G}{G}{G}: his +1 makes a 3/3 Beast every turn, his -3 draws cards equal to the greatest power among your creatures, and his -6 makes a 6/6 Wurm for each land you control. A planeswalker that makes bodies and draws a pile of cards.

Collective Resistance is an escalate spell that destroys an artifact, destroys an enchantment, or protects a creature. It is played in about one Ghalta deck in five.
Reclamation Sage is a 2/1 for {2}{G} that destroys an artifact or enchantment when it enters. It does the same job on a body, and it is played in a third of Ghalta decks.

Scavenger Grounds is a Desert that taps for {C}, and its exile-all-graveyards ability needs a Desert to sacrifice. This is the third land swap, and it takes the deck from 39 to 36 lands.
Kogla, the Titan Ape is a 7/6 for {3}{G}{G}{G}. When it enters it fights a creature you do not control, and whenever it attacks it destroys an artifact or enchantment the defending player controls. It is removal on a body that also reduces Ghalta's cost.

Challenger Troll is a 6/5 for {4}{G} that makes each of your power-4 creatures unblockable by more than one creature. It is not a card Ghalta decks usually play.
Agonasaur Rex is an 8/8 trampler for {3}{G}{G}, and it has cycling {2}{G}. When you cycle it, you put two +1/+1 counters on a creature, which gains trample and indestructible until end of turn. It is bigger than the Troll and a trick on a bad draw.

Arasta of the Endless Web is a 3/5 reach Spider that makes a 1/2 Spider whenever an opponent casts an instant or sorcery. It is not a card Ghalta decks usually play.
Outcaster Trailblazer is a 4/2 for {2}{G}. When it enters you add one mana of any colour, and whenever another creature with power 4 or greater enters you draw a card. In a deck full of power-4 creatures that is a card for each one, and it has plot if you want to cast it for free later.

Clifftop Lookout ({2}{G}) is not a card Ghalta decks usually play. It reads: Reach. When this creature enters, reveal cards from the top of your library until you reveal a land card.
Majestic Genesis ({6}{G}{G}) scores 41: it is in 42% of Ghalta decks with 40% synergy. It reads: Reveal the top X cards of your library, where X is the greatest mana value of a commander you own on the battlefield or in the command zone. You may put any number of permanent cards from among them onto the battlefield.

Dungrove Elder ({2}{G}) is not a card Ghalta decks usually play. It reads: Hexproof. Dungrove Elder's power and toughness are each equal to the number of Forests you control.
Wayward Swordtooth ({2}{G}) scores 40: it is in 44% of Ghalta decks with 38% synergy. It reads: Ascend. You may play an additional land on each of your turns. This creature can't attack or block unless you have the city's blessing.

Paradise Druid ({1}{G}) is not a card Ghalta decks usually play. It reads: This creature has hexproof as long as it's untapped. {T}: Add one mana of any color.
Selvala, Heart of the Wilds ({1}{G}{G}) scores 38: it is in 49% of Ghalta decks with 31% synergy. It reads: Whenever another creature enters, its controller may draw a card if its power is greater than each other creature's power.

Rishkar, Peema Renegade ({2}{G}) is not a card Ghalta decks usually play. It reads: When Rishkar enters, put a +1/+1 counter on each of up to two target creatures. Each creature you control with a counter on it has "{T}: Add {G}."
Fanatic of Rhonas ({1}{G}) scores 30: it is in 42% of Ghalta decks with 23% synergy. It reads: {T}: Add {G}. Ferocious : {T}: Add {G}{G}{G}{G}. Activate only if you control a creature with power 4 or greater. Eternalize {2}{G}{G}.

What to keep
These cards are doing the deck's heavy lifting. Do not cut them.
- Goreclaw, Terror of Qal Sisma$1.20
Played in 69% of Ghalta decks. Your creature spells with power 4 or greater cost {2} less, and it gives your big creatures +1/+1 and trample when it attacks. - Hulking Raptor$0.30
A 5/3 with ward {2} that adds {G}{G} at the beginning of your first main phase, which is ramp and power in one card. - Llanowar Tribe$0.30
Taps for {G}{G}{G}, so one mana creature pays for most of a fatty. - Garruk's Uprising$0.44
Gives your creatures trample and draws you a card for each creature with power 4 or greater that enters. - Llanowar Elves$0.29
Played in 83% of Ghalta decks. The best one-drop accelerant in the colour.
If you want to spend more
These are strong but sit outside a budget upgrade. Prices are the cheapest paper printing.
- Railway Brawler$6.21
A reach trampler that puts counters on each creature that enters, equal to its power. It doubles every fatty you cast. - Traverse the Outlands$5.65
Fetches basic lands equal to your greatest power, which is a huge ramp spell with a board of fatties.
Tramplesaurus Rex has the right mana creatures and the right fatties. The upgrade is cards that reward all that power, a lighter mana base, and a few extra big bodies to get Ghalta down sooner. These fourteen swaps cost about $40 in total.

How the numbers work
Inclusion is the share of Ghalta, Primal Hunger decks (10,655 of them when this was written, 2026-10-27) that play the card. Synergy is how much more often they play it than other decks in the same colours. Oracle score is synergy × 0.6 plus inclusion × 0.4, the same blend The Oracle uses to rank cards for a deck. Lift compares how often the card appears in these decks with how often it could, capped at 8× here; it is shown for context and does not change the score.
Two cautions. Players who run the precon unmodified count as Ghalta decks, which flatters every card the precon contains. Lift is low for many of the staples here because they are played in every green deck, so use lift to compare cards, not to judge one in isolation. A card the commander's decks do not usually play counts as 0 in the average score. Prices are the cheapest non-foil paper printing on TCGplayer (via Scryfall), in USD, and move daily.
